LEADERSHIP TEAM SUCCESSION PLANNING, NEW PARTNERSHIPS & JOINT GLOBAL ADVISORY BOARD

In August 2022, we sadly lost our Chairman & Executive Director, Patrick Collins McCarthy, to a brief illness.  The previous year in November, we also lost our friend and colleague, Vincent Flood, who served as Company Secretary of the international holding company and Senior Financial Advisor to the Collins McCarthy family.  Since then, our co-founder & social entrepreneur, Sean Collins McCarthy, has taken the helm as Managing Director of the group and economist & international development expert, Jess Collins McCarthy, was appointed Honorary Chair (Joint Advisory Board: COL Alliance and LINS Institute) while longtime media colleague, Lawrence Fee, stepped in to serve as Company Secretary in addition to serving as Senior Editor for the group's media & film properties and Senior Advisor for the group's marketing & advertising services.

Since his appointment as Managing Director, Sean has streamlined the group's activities, enhanced the group's advisory services (COL Alliance) and proprietary offerings (Horizon Initiatives), created partnerships & alliances with like-minded organisations, while also assembling a distinguished international advisory board of industry leaders, distinguished academics, financiers & innovators, media & film veterans, and humanitarian, global health and sustainable development experts.

The global advisory board now consists of leadership team members & senior advisors including: an American economist, researcher & international development expert (Purdue University & USAID); an Irish media & broadcast expert (formerly, RTE & Windmill Lane); a British sports & entertainment expert (formerly, IMG & WME); a former senior military leader (formerly, British Armed Forces & NATO) and international security & humanitarian affairs expert (former Advisor, UK House of Commons Defence Committee and Board Member, Center for Intl. Humanitarian Cooperation); a global health expert and humanitarian (French Doctors: Médecins Sans Frontières & Médecins du Monde); the Chair of a British university initiative & former Assistant Dean of an American university department (Harper Adams University & Purdue University); a Senegalese German-based academic, humanitarian, and NGO leader (FORWARD for Women, E.v.); an American German-based publisher, academic and human rights activist (associated with the University of Oxford and Harvard University):

Between 1996 - 2004, Lawrence established one of Ireland's leading multi-media companies, Yard Media.  Initially, established as the first all digital post-production house in Ireland, Yard, which grew to become the first post-production house in Ireland with outside broadcasting & satellite uplink capabilities.  Under his leadership, Yard secured contracts with multinational marketing firms, international NGOs, global events, etc.  Lawrence also created a sister company, Pluto (focused on the animation, SFX and 3D market), as well as Inferno and Flame, which specialised in compositing and effects capabilities. The Yard Group grew to employ over 60 experts and provided a range of facilities for both the broadcast and corporate industries - consultancy, production, camera crews, editing, graphics, studio and satellite uplink services.  Clients availing of the company's services included Bank of Ireland, eircom, Intel, Trintech, Enterprise Ireland, Revenue Commissioners, European Commission, Reuters and British Aerospace.  In addition, The Yard Group also became the Official Broadcast supplier for the 2003 Special Olympics World Games.  In 2004, the Yard Group experienced a major economic downturn and the diversification strategies created more competitive issues than advantages, and consequently, Lawrence and his partners decided to closed its doors.

Lawrence's entrepreneurial spirit was resilient and that same year, he decided to establish a boutique production and post-production house that would concentrate on offering high-quality services to the film and advertising industry, which he called Yard Media.  Nearly a decade on, Yard Media has had the opportunity to work with award-winning filmmakers, advertising agencies, NGOs & global brands.  In addition, Yard Media has partnered with Roofbox Media, the production arm of the COL Media Unit to handle post-production requirements for its multi-genre media portfolio.

Prior to establishing The Yard Group, Lawrence worked as Editor at Windmill Lane.  He began his career at Ireland's national broadcaster, RTE, as an Editor for current affairs, news and sports broadcasting programming alongside his friend and colleague, Patrick Collins-McCarthy (Chairman Emeritus, 1946 - 2022).

CYCLE OF LIFE SERIES: HUMANITARIAN & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

The Cycle of Life Series, an independent media for development factual documentary series (in association with our affiliated media roundtable programme and forum), explores the lives of extraordinary people who rose above significant challenges and now pay it forward by dedicating time & resources to helping at-risk children, vulnerable young people and marginalised women overcome immense obstacles & circumstances to break the vicious cycle of poverty and create an upward cycle of change. The series documents the compassionate relationships and supportive environment offered by NGOs, Non-profit/CSR-focused organisations and grassroots community-based outreach projects whose combined dedication and commitment are beginning to combat injustice and overcome socio-economic obstacles faced by the marginalised owing to immense barriers, abject poverty, degradation, gender inequality and deprivation.

The Cycle of Life Series focuses on generating global awareness for grassroots humanitarian/conservation projects working in partnership with international non-profits/NGOs and intergovernmental organisations to create low-cost humanitarian interventions and sustainable development solutions (across social enterprise, education, sports, arts, health, agriculture, social innovation, etc.) that empower marginalised communities (from developing and least developed countries), including vulnerable women, at-risk children and small-holder farm families, regardless of gender, race, colour or creed.

Part 1 of Keeping My Virginity: The Bride Price examines the cultural and socio-economic challenges of FGM, fistula and early/forced marriage in East Africa, namely Kenya and Tanzania, and enables the viewer to gain unique insight into low-cost health & education interventions being implemented by a number of dynamic projects, empowering vulnerable women and at-risk children by offering safe havens, education opportunities and health care for young girls escaping FGM, rape and/or early/forced marriage.

Part 1 profiles NGO projects/initiatives in East Africa including: Sekenani Girls High School, the first secondary school for young girls, offering education and a future free of hard labour, child marriage and FGM, supported by UK non-profit, Educating the Children, and Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Unite and Virgin Atlantic; Olmalaika Home, a rescue centre in the Maasai Mara that offers a safe haven for young girls escaping FGM, rape and/or early/forced marriage, supported by medical practitioners and sustainable social enterprises; SAM Elimu Program, an education scholarship program in Lewa Conservancy, Nanuki and Nairobi, founded by Dr. Peter Linneman and supported by March to the Top - Africa, a foundation founded by Roy Hilton March and his wife, Barbara; Kenya Children's Home (formerly, Thomas Bernardos House) funded by the Gloag Foundation whose founder is Dame Ann Gloag; and other similar projects & initiatives.

Part 1, The Bride Price, is a reference to Adam Salim’s famous Swahili love song: Malaika.

Part 2 of Keeping My Virginity: A Terrible Beauty is Born takes an in-depth look at the challenges (gender-based violence, FGM, racism, health risk, etc.) facing migrant women and girls (including refugees and asylum seekers from Africa, the Middle East and Asia) striving to make a new life in Europe, and the solutions being offered by compassionate and dedicated social workers, campaigners and health professionals, largely led by migrant women who overcame significant obstacles to pay it forward and assist the next generation of migrant women and children in both Europe and their nation of birth.

Part 2 profiles NGO projects/initiatives in Ireland, UK, Germany & East Africa including: Akina Dada wa Africa (AkiDwA), an Irish-based non-profit founded by Kenyan-born Irish activist, Dr. Salome Mbugua; Forward for Women, a Frankfurt-based NGO inspired by Forward (UK) and founded by Senegalese-born FGM survivor, activist & educator, Dr. Mariame Racine Sow; UnCUT/VOICES Press, a publishing house & educational platform, founded by Dr. Tobe Levin, dedicated to ending FGM; Desert Flower Center at Waldfriede Hospital (Berlin), a world leader in reconstructive surgeries for FGM victims, gynaecological, urological & psychological treatment; Desert Flower Foundation, an initiative established by FGM survivor, Activist, Author & Supermodel, Waris Dirie; Gynocare Women’s and Fistula Hospital led by Hillary Mabeya, MD and his wife, Caroline, supported by FIGO, Fistula Fndn., Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Unite and Dame Ann Gloag's foundation.

Part 2, A Terrible Beauty is Born is a reference to W.B. Yate’s poem: Easter, 1916.

Part 3 of Keeping My Virginity: Sweetness on the Desert Air documents the projects and initiatives in West and East Africa supported by Desert Flower Center/Foundation (Berlin/Vienna) and Forward for Women (Frankfurt), contrasting narratives including the tribal, cultural and socio-economic dynamics at play, set against two vibrant yet volatile backdrops.

Embarking on a journey of goodwill, the viewer is granted a special behind the scenes access to rare footage, as the Cycle of Life film crew travel alongside three courageous Medical Doctors - Dr. Cornelia Strunz, Dr. Roland Scherer and Dr. Uwe von Fritschen - from Desert Flower Center Berlin, Germany en route to Eldoret, Kenya to assist their Kenyan colleagues perform operations on victims of FGM and fistula.

Part 3 completes the cycle of life as the viewer travels from Africa to Asia with the Cycle of Life film crew as they go deep into male-dominated ghettoes and rural/isolated villages in India and Bangladesh to shine a light on the broader issues of early/forced marriage, dowry deaths and child labour in these largely male-dominated environments while chronicling inspirational narratives of women and girls who are fighting against the sands of time to break intergenerational patterns of injustice regardless of the consequences.

Part 3, Sweetness on the Desert Air is a reference to Thomas Gray’s poem: Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard.

CONNECTING THE DOTS: HUMANITARIAN AFFAIRS, SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, GLOBAL HEALTH, SOCIAL INNOVATION AND IMPACT INVESTING

COL Alliance and LINS Institute hosted the 2024 Cycle of Life Global Forum and affiliated awards (the Michael Collins Path to Freedon Awards). The 2024 global forum offered invite-only events (focused on social impact & innovation, climate action & justice; sports & arts for development; global health & human rights; media for development, etc.) in Dublin, Kilkenny and Waterford in association with the Irish Film Institute, Buswells Hotel & Conference Centre, Kilkenny Civic Trust (Kilkenny Castle, Butler House & Gardens, etc.), and House of Waterford Crystal.  The 2024 global forum convened guest speakers, participants and delegates affiliated with world-renowned institutes, universities, NGOs and intergovernmental organisations: Harvard University, Cornell University, University of Oxford, Purdue University, Médecins Sans Frontières, Médecins du Monde, Concern Worldwide, Haven Community Foundation, BBC, Front Line Defenders, The Guardian, National Geographic, Time Magazine, European Union, United Nations, etc.

The annual global forum encompasses film screenings, masterclasses, literary readings/book launches, media roundtable panel discussions, guest lecture series, seminars, sports & arts workshops, art & photography exhibitions, sport outings & cultural tours, and social impact, human rights & climate action awards (Path to Freedom Awards).

The forum & awards were inspired by our Cycle of Life Media for Development Series (a project spearheaded by Sean Collins McCarthy with the assistance of colleagues from CNN, National Geographic, Al Jazeera English, Harvard University, Purdue University, etc.), which features a long list of stakeholders supporting grasroots projects, NGOs and social impact initiatives including:
